Dyslexia Assessments and Services

WHICH ASSESSMENT IS RIGHT FOR ME?

If you think that your child might have a specific learning difficulty, speak to Karen, and she will help you decide if a full diagnostic assessment is right for you, and if additional tests to examine numeracy skills and general maths development are required.

If your child doesn't have a learning difficulty, but you would like to know how they are getting on compared to national norms, a combined literacy and maths assessment, or perhaps just one of these separately might be useful, if you think that a little extra help in one area or the other might be called for.

Working Memory and Cognitive Profile assessments look at underlying cognitive processes, and identify strengths and weaknesses.  These assessments may reveal weaknesses to target, and help you decide if your child is doing as well at school as they should be, given their current developed abilities.

Diagnostic Dyslexia Assessment £450 - Combined Dyslexia and Additional Holistic Maths Assessment  £600

A Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia is required to apply for extra time in examinations, as evidence when applying for funded support, and may help to identify the best ways forward to improve progress. It involves an examination of ability, including underlying cognitive processes such as working memory, as well as verbal and non-verbal reasoning, vocabulary, phonological awareness, phonological and visual processing and fine motor skills. Attainment in the areas of single word reading, reading comprehension, spelling, writing and maths, is also examined.

For many children, the difficulties linked to their processing differences extend across literacy and maths, and it is not necessary to obtain a separate diagnosis of dyscalculia in order to request appropriate support or reasonable adjustments in maths. Dyslexia Tests UK Diagnostic Assessments include standardised tests of maths calculation and fluency which are acceptable evidence of the extent of difficulties with mathematical processing.

If a fuller picture of maths difficulties is sought, additional standardised tests and a dynamic holistic assessment, which involves working on maths activities with your child, observing their actions and responses, and seeing what they can do, and where there are gaps in their knowledge and understanding, will  be administered during a separate session. Maths difficulties extend along a continuum. These tests will identify the extent of the difficulties with maths, and may reveal maths anxiety which often impacts on maths processing speed.

The assessment process takes around three hours (longer if additional maths tests are included), and is designed to be engaging and enjoyable, involving lots of short activities to avoid fatigue.  Our SASC registered assessor (Assessment Practising Certificate issued by the Dyslexia Guild) will carefully analyse your child's results, identify strengths and weaknesses, and produce a comprehensive report. The report will identify whether or not your child's profile meets the criteria for a diagnosis of SpLD - Dyslexia and other co-occurring difficulties.

The report will be written according to SASC guidelines, and contain advice and recommendations about what to do next. Dyslexia is a life-long disability, it does not go away, and your diagnosis of Dyslexia will also remain valid.

Working Memory Assessments     £250

Memory is used in nearly everything we do from day to day, and allows us to develop new skills and acquire knowledge.  When something is going wrong in the learning process, it may be useful to evaluate the many aspects of memory to try to pinpoint the areas of difficulty, in order to plan the best way forward.  This assessment will take around two hours and examines aspects of attention, memory and learning.

Literacy Assessment   £150

This assessment takes up to an hour and a half, and uses a range of standardised and diagnostic tests to examine attainment in phonological processing, decoding and spelling, single word reading, reading comprehension, and a comprehensive writing analysis. The report will identify strengths and weaknesses in this area, and lets you see how well your child is doing compared to their peers, but is not intended to diagnose learning difficulties.

Maths Assessment   £200

This assessment takes up to two hours, and will examine your child's mathematical calculation and processing, and evaluate how slow and effortful your child finds maths calculation.  Children with maths difficulties may have problems with executive function (see downloads section), working memory, or rapid recall of known number facts.  If maths calculation is slow and effortful, children need more time, to process the questions, to stop and think about the strategies to use, to process the calculations and to write down and check their responses.  These maths difficulties often result from slow processing, poor working memory, and poor visual processing including visual memory.  This assessment includes working memory, processing speed, visual processing / visual memory and the Maths Fluency and Computation sub tests of the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, Third Edition (KTEA-3).   This assessment provides evidence of speed and effort required when performing calculations, but is not suitable for the diagnosis of dyscalculia.

Combined Literacy and Maths Assessment   £300

This assessment takes around three hours, and combines the literacy and maths elements detailed above.

Cognitive Profile Assessment    £250

This standardised assessment will take about two hours and focuses on the areas of verbal, non-verbal and quantitative reasoning, vocabulary, processing speed and working memory.  This assessment provides an indication of underlying ability, a profile of strengths and weaknesses, and advice on steps to take to improve progress.  The results provide a realistic overview of your child's developed abilities at the time of assessment, and are not intended to identify learning difficulties.

Cogmed Working Memory Training   £550

New Cogmed is a training programme comprising a number of visuo-spatial and verbal tasks, designed to increase working memory capacity, over a period of 5 to 10 weeks.  Training schedules are flexible, ideally 20 minutes or so each day, at least three or four days a week.  Individual schedules are negotiable, and depend on the age of the user.

Training is online, conducted at the user's home.  Parents are supported to act as day to day coach, while our Cogmed Coach provides remote supervision and email or telephone feedback.
